  • Elmer’s Glue-All
  • Treadmill Silicone

  • Dixie Cups
  • Stir Sticks
  • Rotating Cake Stand (My Spinner)

Make sure you have all these supplies ready before you start, as they are crucial for achieving the best results with the technique.

MY PAINT AND POURING MEDIUM RECIPES

To create the perfect consistency for your paint and pouring medium, follow these recipes:

  • Paint Recipe: Mix 2 parts Pouring Medium with 1 part Paint. Adjust the ratio as needed by adding more paint or more pouring medium.
  • Pouring Medium Recipe: Combine 3 parts Floetrol, 2 parts Elmer’s Glue-All, and 1 part Water. Mix well until you have a smooth and creamy consistency.

When it comes to mixing pigment powders, it’s slightly different from mixing acrylic paint. Start by putting the powder in your cup and then add enough pouring medium to cover the cup’s bottom. Mix until the powder is fully dissolved, and then add the remaining pouring medium to the cup. This ensures that the pigment powder is evenly distributed and will create vibrant colors in your artwork.

SWIPE & SPIN Acrylic Paint Pouring Technique

Now that you have all your supplies ready let’s dive into the exciting SWIPE & SPIN technique! This technique combines both swiping and spinning motions to create stunning effects on your canvas. Follow along with the steps below:

  1. After mixing your paints, add 3 drops of Treadmill Silicone oil to each color and mix gently. It’s important not to overmix the oil as it can result in small cells that won’t grow. The key is to mix the silicone oil through the paint while maintaining its integrity.
  2. For the first swipe, add the colors to the canvas in a spiral design. Make sure to cover the sides, edges, and corners of the canvas with white paint to ensure full coverage.
  3. Use white paint on the right sides of the canvas as your swipe color. The amount of swipe color you use should be enough to cover the area. I usually create a line that is about 1″ x 10″ across the canvas.
  4. Choose a tool for swiping. You can use a dry paper towel or any other tool you have available. I personally prefer a dry paper towel as it helps absorb excess paint.
  5. Gently place the towel over the top of the swipe paint color without pressing down. Let it absorb some paint, and then slowly pull the towel down the canvas. This is where the magic happens! Watch as the cells form and grow, creating beautiful patterns on your canvas.
  6. Give the cells some time to grow and add heat as needed. Once you see that the cells have stopped growing, it’s time to spin the canvas. This will give your artwork an extra element of movement and visual interest.
  7. If you struggle with keeping your canvas secure on the spinner, try adding some paint, water, or pouring medium to the spinner surface. The moisture will help secure the canvas and prevent it from flying off during the spin.

A FREE RESOURCE TO ASSIST YOU: PAINT POUR CALCULATORS

One of the frustrating parts of acrylic paint pouring is figuring out how much paint to use. Mixing too much paint can be wasteful, while mixing too little can result in an incomplete project. That’s why I’ve created two calculators to help you determine the approximate amount of paint you’ll need for your project.

These calculators are a FREE resource that you can use to make your paint pouring experience smoother and more enjoyable. Simply enter the dimensions of your surface (height, width, and depth) into the calculators, and they will give you an estimate of how many ounces of paint you’ll need. No more guesswork or wasted materials!

Using these calculators will help you plan your projects more effectively and ensure that you have enough paint to complete each artwork. Don’t waste time and materials – try out these calculators and take the guesswork out of paint pouring!
